The battles are here, from Bunker Hill to the Delaware crossing to Saratoga's payoff in the French alliance, but so is the argument: Common Sense changing minds, Patrick Henry's speech, Paine's words read aloud to freezing troops. The series keeps returning to who the promise left out, with episodes on Mum Bett suing for her freedom and James Armistead spying for Lafayette and returning to slavery anyway. Substantial upper-elementary history that doesn't flatten the hard parts.
