Summary
Today, the Seminole Tribe of Florida numbers 4,000—and they call themselves the "Unconquered People." The story behind the name goes back nearly 200 years, to a series of conflicts known as the Seminole Wars. U.S. historians categorize them as three separate wars, but the Seminole consider it one decades-long fight for survival. Generals like Osceola and Billy Bowlegs led the fight, which took the greatest toll on the U.S. army of any conflict with a Native nation.
