Summary
In division equations, sometimes the dividend can’t be divided into equal parts. There’s a remainder, a chunk left over that’s less than the divisor. When solving division word problems, deciding what to do with a remainder depends on the situation. You can either drop it, round up, or make it a fraction. For example, when the problem concerns everyone getting an equal share, you drop the remainder. When you’re figuring out how many containers you need to hold the number of items in the dividend, you round up.
