Summary
Want to meet the father of our country? George Washington worked in public service his entire life, rising through the ranks of the colonial militia, and serving in the Virginia Legislature. When the colonies went to war with England, Washington was chosen to lead the Continental Army. He led colonial forces to victory against the British in the American Revolutionary War, against brutal odds and harsh conditions. He was then elected to be the country's first president, where he set the standard for all future presidents. Despite his fight for American liberties, hundreds of people were enslaved on Washington's plantation—though he changed his position on slavery later in life.
