Summary
Whether or not you celebrate it, you’ve probably heard of Easter. The holiday celebrates Christianity’s central belief: the resurrection of Jesus, whom Christians believe is the son of God. He was a preacher whose ideas attracted a ton of followers. But the Roman authorities saw him as a threat, arrested him, and sentenced him to death by crucifixion. According to the Christian Bible, he rose from the dead three days later. In the weeks before Easter, many Christians observe a solemn period of reflection called Lent. It ends in Holy Week, which leads up to Easter, a day of great celebration. Plenty of people participate, whether or not they’re religious. Some of the holiday’s traditions are based on spring celebrations of older religions, like the Easter bunny and eggs. Different countries have their other unique customs, too.
